Records of the Harvard College Library: Borrowing privileges correspondence
This collection contains correspondence to the Harvard College librarian asking for book borrowing privileges, primarily from faculty and other individuals with a connection to the college, dated 1775 to circa 1826, and a 20th century dealer catalog entry for a 1764 letter related to donated volumes. The records include the borrower's name, the titles of the books borrowed, the date of loans, and in some cases, the return of books.
Corporation papers, 1st series, supplements to the Harvard College Papers, Volumes 1 and 2
Records of the Harvard Bicentenary Celebration
The records document some of the activities related to the Harvard Bicentenary Celebration held on September 8, 1836. Materials include extracts listing the votes of the Corporation about the 1836 celebration, a plan for the evening illumination of Holworthy Hall, a volume of autographs signed by Harvard graduates and guests, blank tickets for the “Dinner of the Alumni” held during the celebration and letters from Harvard alumni confirming their attendance at the dinner.
Annual reports of the Harvard libraries and related materials
The Harvard University Library annual report is a set of publications issued annually by Harvard University since 1878. The reports include updates on library facilities, the acquisition of new materials, circulation statistics, and library expenditures. Many reports are reprinted from the reports of the President of Harvard University, but include donor and personnel information not included in the President's report.
Mathematical theses, 1782-1839.
The mathematical theses consist of equations and drawings which illustrate the equations. At the time of their creation, the purpose of these finely executed documents on large sheets of paper was to demonstrate a student's mastery of one or more mathematical concepts, yet the enduring value of many of the them lies in the fact that they are works of art.
Benjamin Peirce personal archive
Benjamin Peirce (1778-1831), a Harvard historian and librarian, was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He earned his AB from Harvard in 1801, and was a merchant and state legislator prior to his appointment as college librarian in 1826. This collection contains personal correspondence, student papers, political writings, and manuscripts, notes, and letters relating to Peirce's work on the history of Harvard University, dated 1787-1832.
Photographic views of Winthrop House
John Winthrop House, established in 1931, is one of the student residential houses in Harvard University's house system. The two buildings that make up Winthrop House are Gore Hall and Standish Hall, which were both freshman dormitories before being incorporated into one administrative entity in 1931. This collection holds a visual record of Winthrop House's buildings, grounds, and surroundings from 1913 to 1957.
